Natural Collective
"Marlowe Emerson’s use of mixed media and collage allows her to explore and connect with the diverse environment of the Virginia coast. “Natural Collective” (April 7 – July 27, 2017 at the Transit Gallery) is comprised of works created from scans, photographs and drawings of specimens collected from nature. Through this body of work, Marlowe hopes to heighten our perception of the interdependent relationship between all elements of nature, including ourselves.
Specifically for this exhibition, Marlowe is creating a large scale collage entitled “Our Forest” from tree images and a variety of forest vegetation native to Hampton Roads. She is accepting donations of specific images and related items from those who wish to contribute. Through this collaboration, she hopes to communicate that our environment is a result of our collective actions. Find more information here."

Look Outside, Look Inside
Look Outside, Look Inside is a collection of collage and mixed media works by Marlowe Emerson that explore the ways in which nature can reflect our states of mind. These pieces invite us to look outside at nature - weather, seasons, light, color, storm and calm - to better understand and reflect on our internal thoughts and emotions - love, peace, anger, turmoil. From stormy beaches to tangled gardens, minds and moods are represented here, entwined with the natural world. The layered, collaged technique also reflects how our past experiences become layered to influence our experience of the present. Each collage element has been preserved as a memento of the past and yet is fully integrated into the work that we now experience as the present.
